Arctic Chill, Wind & Waiting

Look at all the twigs blown down

When I wrote last week’s blog post, I talked about the geese enjoying al fresco dining on our front lakeside lawn. Even posted photos of the diners. Like most everyone else, they enjoyed the weather for outdoor eating and must have been pleased by what the chef provided.

Well, Sunday night changed everything. Nary a goose has visited their formerly favorite food hangout. In fact I can report they’ve gone out of business. Maybe our township reminded them of zoning laws and slapped a hefty fine on the place Or closed it down until the goosey managers separated the dining experience from the pooping place.

Or perhaps what caused the diner’s demise was the weather change. Sunday night brought sustained high winds with gust of over 50 mph. Rather difficult to eat much less poop in that kind of wind. Especially when said wind whipped up the lake water’s waves which kept washing over the dining area.

But worst of all was the drop in temperatures. We went from unusually warm to Arctic cold. Even the geese leave the Arctic come winter.

Closed. For good?

Closed. For good?

So the winged, gossipy, voraciously hungry diners have flown further south. I received an email from a friend much further south and a few states away that the geese were driving her crazy. They were more in number than usual, very hungry, and had set up a dinner on the shore of a pond in her subdivision. Guess those geese love to be near water! 😉

So this week we endured very cold temps and until the past few days very high winds which made those dreaded wind chills more relevant to place like Nome, Alaska or Siberia in January.

Those my photos of dreary days, ice-caked piers, the minimal but ONLY snow we’ve gotten all winter, (Even a goose knows it rarely snows when it’s frigid, right?)

In case you’re thinking I only have geese on my mind, or ice and cold temps, there’s more. This week the second book in the Soul String Saga, Soul String: The Key when live in all digital formats except KOBO. They promise me that will be resolved. Maybe about the time spring comes? But I’m posting my beautiful cover here today and working on revising the next book in the series which should be out in mid to late February.

What? You can’t wait? Waiting teaches patience. Patience is good for you. That’s what my mom ALWAYS said.

After all, think of all those football fans who have to wait till next year cheer their team on for the Super Bowl.

Actually, since my team didn’t make it, what I’m looking forward to is those commercials. What are you waiting for this week? Anything?

My upcoming week is filled with meeting obligations, both professional and personal. Should be a busy week for me.

I have to admit I don’t mind the geese heading to warmer waters. I don’t miss the poop at all.

  2. Yes, we’ve been enduring the cold up here in Green Bay, too. Expecting an ice storm later, today, too, just like you. Stay warm and safe!

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures and congratulations on the book release. I got my copy earlier in the week. 🙂

  3. Donna Marie Rogers Says:

A very beautiful cover, Casey, I can’t wait to read it. And even though our beloved Packers aren’t in it, I can’t wait to watch the Super Bowl. LOVE football….and the commericals are always fun, too.

Yikes, I need to check out the Weather channel! I didn’t know an ice storm was heading our way. 😦

  4. Can’t say I blame those geese. Looks like the heat went out in their diner. Hope you are able to stay nice and warm. I’m ready for some spring weather for sure.

  5. Edie Ramer Says:

Congratulations on The Key!!! How exciting! Love the green color, too.

I’m looking forward to meeting the local indie authors for lunch this week, and we’re doing something with the family next weekend. Otherwise, I’ll be writing many words, I hope.

  6. Anne,

Have they lunched at your lawn ever? This is the first year we’ve seen this and we’ve been here for 24 years.

Yep, I’m glad they’re gone and hope they forget about this lunch spot come spring.

  7. Stacey,

Thanks for purchasing the book. Right now we’re getting some heavy snow right off the cold lake and big flakes obliterating the view. But it’s all supposed to turn to sleet, then freezing rain, then rain all day tomorrow because the temps start climbing, Nothing more depressing than rain and still chilly temps.

  8. Donna,

Yep, I’m bummed the Packers didn’t make it this year and neither team playing excites me. But the commercials? Yeah, I usually enjoy those. Some years are better than others.

I love my cover also and we’re already working on the cover for Book 3.

  9. Jamie,

Since you’re further north and west I think you’ve gotten more snow that we have and more cold. I can’t complain since this winter has been mostly mild but I’d sure like a real spring to arrive soon.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  10. Edie,

I think we’ll both be putting many words down on the pages this week. You’re far more prolific than I am. So glad you like the cover.

Give my best to everyone at the indie lunch when you go.

  11. Sandy Says:

The weather has been so crazy this year. Stay safe, Casey. Great post. Congratulations on your new book.

  12. Hi Sandy,

You stay safe also. Weather is crazy everywhere this year. While the temp has risen this afternoon and we now have freezing rain, I heard thunder about an hour ago. Go figure. By Wednesday night we’re back on the road to zero temps–at least according to the forecasters.

  13. Nancy Kaye Says:

Love the pictures. I think your “goose” tales are hilarious. Keep warm by your fireplace.

  14. Nancy,

Thanks for saying my goose stories are hilarious. I’ve never thought I had a stitch of humor in my writing and humor is good. 🙂

I should have added a few more photos but there’s always another Sunday. Right now this mighty lake is busy building an ice shelf from ice rolling in from Michigan or maybe just the middle of the lake.

  15. Wow, you have been busy, Casey! How many books have you written?

  16. Casey, I get a frigid chill just looking at those pictures. We get birds down here … we call them “snow birds.” They clog the highways, crowd up our restaurants and make a holy mess all winter. They they fly, drive or jog back north.

About my plans. I plan to finally find another car. I feel unhinged without wheels 🙂

  17. Lorna,

Eight published now. Another I’m revising at the moment and hopefully it will be published by the end of Feb while I’m then working on the last 3 of the Soul String series. Then I’ll get back to my Dessert Dames series. I have a historical full written and edited but don’t think that will ever be published,

  18. Florence,

Yah, I know about those snowbirds. I encountered them three times on trips to Florida to visit friends and that was the only time I could get there. Otherwise I’d never have gone there during that time. 😉

Sure hope you get your car problems resolved soon.
